Hegemony in the Family Sphere
an exercise in character traits

A family sits at the dinner table.
THAD: Did you make the baseball team, Bradley?
BRAD: Naw, screw those guys.
MARTHA: Language, Brad.
BRAD: I totally made it, but I realized I didn’t want to subscribe to their hegemony.
THAD: Now Brad, I don’t know if you’re using that word correctly.
BRAD: Screw you, Dad.
MARTHA: Brad!
THAD: Now, Martha, it’s quite all right. The boy’s just speaking his mind.
MARTHA: Not now, Thad. You will apologize to your father, young man.
BRAD: I will apologize to no one, Mom.
MARTHA: Bradley Christopher Jenkins, you will apologize right now!
THAD: Seriously, Martha, it’s fine…
BRAD: Fuck you, Mom!
MARTHA: Go to your room, Bradley!
BRAD: Don’t push your hegemony on me!
MARTHA: Bradley Christopher Jenkins!
BRAD: I am a thinking being!
MARTHA: Bradley Christo Jenks!
BRAD: Gimme those bread rolls!
MARTHA: Bradley Jenks!
BRAD: I’m outta here!
Brad leaves the table with style.
THAD: Martha, you’ve done it again.
MARTHA: Thaddeus. Go to your room.
THAD: Ok. Sure. I’m just gonna-
MARTHA: No rolls.
THAD: Sure.
Exeunt.
